Starting with an aquarium system

Our mission is to support the fish keeping hobby with high standards of quality. We are excited to help new hobbyist set up home aquariums. While larger Aquariums are more of an environment to care for, there are several reasons why we recommend starting with an aquarium that is at least 3 gallons.

The volume of water matters

Larger volumes of water in aquariums are generally more stable in terms of temperature and water chemistry which are crucial for the health of fish. Fluctuations can stress fish and make them more susceptible to disease.

Fish enjoy (we could say need) space to move around and thrive, and larger tanks can provide them with a healthier environment. More space for decorations, plants, and hiding spots for fish create a more natural and enriching environment for the fish, reducing stress and promoting their well-being.

Larger tanks also provide

  1. Adequate Filtration: Filtration is essential for maintaining water quality by removing waste and harmful substances. Proper filtration helps create a stable and healthy environment for the fish.
  2. Better Oxygen Exchange: Larger aquariums have a greater surface area relative to their volume, which allows for better oxygen exchange at the water’s surface. This is important for the well-being of fish, as they require oxygen to breathe.
  3. Environment Suitable for a Variety of Fish: Typically air breathers, such as Betta fish, are the only breed that can live in fish bowl size environment. However, to thrive, they need more space for exercise and more decor and hiding places for brain stimulation. Larger aquariums can accommodate a wider variety of fish species, including those that require more space or specific water conditions. Fish bowls are generally limited in the types and number of fish that can be housed in them.
